Mountain Evening

A bit of alpenglow as the sun dipped under the clouds and the low, ever more southern rays, lit the mountain and valley tree tops this evening.

  • Looking toward the Cabinet Mountains? Just a guess, as I haven’t been out there since the early nineties with the wife and kids after a visit to Havre and the folks.

  • This picture just blows me away!!! Those colors on the mountain peaks … it looks like they’re on fire. Awesome!!!

  • Glenn, I’m between Bigfork and Kalispell – that is the Swan Range of the Continental Divide. The range curves around me to the north before becoming the Whitefish Range – I think that’s right. Jewell Basin is almost directly east. The Cabinets are to my west across the valley some.

Thanks Pat, the photo accentuates the color a bit and I missed getting the valley completely lit up – it is a gorgeous effect but lasts a very short time as the sun is setting.

  • Big Elk in the Swans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As I said, it has been awhile since I was up in that country. HiLine rat, ya know;-)

  • There is a small herd of elk that I usually see in the Spring and Fall…moving through. And that is the only time I’ve seen bears or bear sign.

  • It won’t be long before there is snow there and the light is angled on the hill. Then you will be happy!

  • About harvest time the hill going down into Loma on US 87 is a real treat in the afternoon. That is where the Marias River flows into the Missouri River. Good fishing spot.

  • Reamus, You are right – I’m already looking at my snowshoes!

Glenn, I think I hear MT calling…calling your wife as well, I hope. I’ll look up the spot on 87.

  • We are headed to The Mojave Desert next month. On the 9th I go to work at Edwards AFB as a DOD civilian. It is where the job is. I was supposed to start on the 14th of September but the kidney surgery moved things back. The Air Force was willing to move the start as I was one of the primary candidates. And it gets me off of the roller coaster here in Wichita.
I doubt that I will ever go back. I ran away from Havre twice. The first was at 19 to go to sea and the second was at 44 to take a job at Learjet.

  • Is there a way to get a copy of this picture? I would love to hang it in my home, it is so beautiful.

  • OH, I just read Glenn’s post. What a small world! I live in the Mojave Desert in a small town next to Edwards AFB. Not sure if he would want any advice or suggestions about the area…but I’ve got four decades of experience with the Mojave Desert. I’ll send my email address if you want to talk….rhonda

  • Rhonda,
It’s a go! BTW, my sister-in-law is the manager at Bed, Bath and Beyond in Palmdale!
Just so you know we are looking at California City. It seems to have that small town flavour and the DOD housing referal site has more available for rental there than Rosamond, Boron, Mojave and North Edwards. I also worked the Herzog Rock Trains on the line between Barstow and Mojave. I have a few buddies on the BNSF in Barstow.
But have Ann send you my email. We will take any help we can get, gladly!

  • You have truly captured the beauty around you. What a pleasure. ( I love the picture of Bob waiting by the empty bowl ; ) )
