I’m talking about July. Around my house, July is not a favorite. July starts out with the 4th of July holiday. The Independence day part of that is fine. I love the USA! The fireworks part we do not love so much. I love the pretty stuff. It is the noisy stuff… You can probably imagine how Karl feels about that.
And it gets hot…ok, relatively, but to us it is hot.
I turn into a bit of a curmudgeon from now until early August…our Summer – six whole weeks of it. No real excuse for it, just not my favorite time, but I seem to do better acknowledging it and laughing about it. In years past I did things like put houses up for sale, buy motorhomes – life altering kinds of things. Fortunately, this year the work schedule is very busy so I can stay in my cool little house and work away. Karl comes in about 10 in the morning and does not venture out again until 6 or 7 in the evening – after this first week of noise when we don’t go out until 1 or 2 in the morning…
Bob sprawls on the front porch like he’s melting…I think it was 79 when I took this photo, humidity about 19%…honestly, HOT!
My blog posting gets irregular in July. Photography-wise I don’t like the bright summer light excepting early morning. I’m usually not out (actually, not up) late enough to catch evening light. There are moments, of course, and I love the light in the woods through the trees…we’ll see how it goes this year.
July…wake us up when it’s over.

i hate july …..but here my reason is the 70 % humidity and 90 degree temps. and no air conditioning. LOL. but then again i love july because i have nothing better to do than sit and home and feel hot. ahhh no work in the summers is glorious!!
Ok, Christy – oh, and teach, you are allowed to use upper case on From the Front Porch :)!
I think it was 79 when I took this photo, humidity about 19%…honestly, HOT!
(smirk) (followed by a Big-Ass grin) 95 today. You’ll find me under the awning with a cigar and a G&T in about two hours. It’s loverly!
My feelings exactly. July is my least favorite month. That’s why we’re heading up to Alaska where July is beautiful, just my speed. I got my phone/computer connection to work last night so I know I’ll be able to update once we get there. In Canada I had best find someone’s WIFI or it will cost me a fortune in data minutes. Sitting in ND right now, headed your direction on highway 2. Keep cool!
I don’t know if it’s July or August that get the better of me … both months can be brutal here in east TN. We just finished up with a horrible hot/humid spell in June and now it’s actually refreshing, almost fall-like, but doubt it will stay that way. Yep, although I am not usually a ‘house plant’ most of those two months will find me inside.
Oooooh, don’t even get me started on fireworks and the 4th. Yes, I love my country but think there are other ways to show it then with big booming fireworks/fire crackers that, around here, have been going on for more then a week and will continue on and on and on! UGH!
Ann, I hear you, but its 7:30 pm 89 and 95% humidity and has stormed the last 10 days, so you should be more positive about temps in the 70’s. I just went for a walk and the bugs got me!
We all suffer one season or another…just don’t do anything crazy!
Buck, I KNEW you would smirk :)!
Have a great trip Marge – I DO want to drive to AK once – (I’ve been there by cruise ship and train) -, but NOT May, June or July :)! Someday a mid-Aug to early Oct trip.
Pat – we are in agreement!
bob blackburn, I know I am being a big baby. MT has the best summer climate – for me – in the U.S., excepting maybe where my folks are in SW CO at altitude where it stays a bit cooler than here usually.
Seriously, the usually moderate temps-no humidity-VERY few bugs here is as comfortable as summer will ever be for me. As Reamus says, we all “suffer” one season or another – summer happens to be my time of uncomfortable unsettledness.
Now, there HAVE been Summers here when we’ve had 10-14 days of upper 90’s and some 100’s. Add some smoke and ash from fires and you have a state full of cranky folks. So far, despite my whining, it has been very pleasant as it is cooling early and warming slowly – more like mid-August than typical late June and July. It is a bit dry for this early, but we have seen it much drier on the 4th – 2 years ago so dry I was sure they would ban fireworks, but they did not. No fires from them but we had a horrible fire summer later.
Onward!
Ann–my first visit to Whitefish was that summer two years ago when you had the horrible fires. But, the Flathead valley was still beautiful enough through the smokey skies for us to fall in love with it!
Here in San Diego, July, August AND September are all months when I want to hide out in my air conditioned house.
My new puppy won’t let me do that this year!
Enjoy the summer as much as you are able!
The Malamutants hate this time of year, too! Too hot, and the fireworks drive them bananas, particularly poor Rocky. We have to pick up sedatives from the vet to get him through this weekend.
I heard somewhere that dogs hear 10 times over what we hear when fireworks go off … good gosh, imagine that! No wonder they all go into hiding or want to run, or, or, or ….
No complaints here about the weather (N Colorado). It been an unusually cool and wet June and beginning of July. High of 84 today. My flowers are doing great, so am taking lots of photos. Poppies, holly hocks, delphiniums, roses and daisies are on center stage right now. Am working on a photo book like PW was giving away a while ago.
Happy 4th to you!
Looks like Bob is going to sleep right through July and Karl looks pretty relaxed also…he looks to be wondering…How much longer til it cools down again?
Well I’m right there with all of you when it comes to the heat of Summer… but would love to have your low humidity with our heat.
Stay cool!
