Freezing Fog

When the temperature is below freezing and there is fog, then we have freezing fog. We have it now. We are forecast to have it until late next week. Here is what it looks like…

No mountain tops, a haze of cold fog that freezes as ice crystals on some of the trees. I am not sure why some trees and not others, but I’m guessing that just like fog swirls around things, this freezing fog swirls also, hitting some trees and not others.

It hits the roads also and it hit my road. I was going to take Karl to the park by the lake and see what things looked like there, but after seeing my road I changed my mind and we walked here at home. And since the lake keeps things warmer around it, there might have been nothing to see…

Freezing fog or not, we walk and we play…

The soccer ball is close to being skinned. This particular ball was acquired in Ohio in Spring of 2006. Maybe we’ll spring for a new one THIS Spring!

  • I like them close up ones Ann. Very good. We call it Ice Fog here in Iowa and in fact had one day of it earlier this winter. Which brings to mind a saying of my late Father- ‘Summer’s fog will roast a hog and winter’s fog will freeze a dog’. Thanks for this post.

  • Intriguing close-ups of the frosty stems, etc. And, Karl….he’s always a good photo subject.

  • Totally awesome pics!

  • We also call it rime ice here and it can be amazingly beautiful! Almost like the trees have turned to crystal and WOW when the sun shines on it
!!! Woo hoo!!! Great pictures Ann!

Never thought of a soccer ball … that might be a great thing for Wally, and something he can’t destroy instantly.

  • Ann–such a beautiful moment. Sigh. Who woulda thunk it?

  • That fog creates a lot of beauty, doesn’t it! Sure is nasty to have to drive in it though! Great photos!

  • The pictures are better on this blog, aren’t they?

  • Try making a landing in it!

  • Hey Montucky – Thank you!

And for all who enjoy the Montana photos on From the Front Porch, I highly recommend that you give Montucky a click. He is a photographer extraordinare – loves Montana and calls the gorgeous Clark Fork River Valley of Montana, home.

Reamus… pea soup plus, eh? Well, you are here so I’m guessing you “walked away” from all of your landings, hence they were good ones!

  • Wonderful pix. My favorite is the thistle. Furthermore, I enjoyed learning about freezing fog. It gets foggy here and I never understood how you could have freezing temps AND fog. Thanks for the lesson.

  • re freezing fog and ice fog and also hoar frost… you can google them all and decide for yourself.

NOAA is calling what we have both ice fog and freezing fog.

Additionally, there is an inversion where the temps under the fog are very much cooler than the temps above the fog, i.e. the mountain tops are unseasonably warm – mid 40’s to 50’s, while we are in the 20’s down low.

  • Karl’s soccer ball is in much better shape than Stella’s…well, I guess that’s a relative decision, all skinned ball things considered. But that Stella surely loves her soccer ball!
