The way I live my day

March 5, 2008

Sunrise

The following quote from Annie Dilliard appeard in a post on Derfwad Manor (a blog I recently found and enjoy!) and it struck a chord with me.

The way we live our days, is the way we live our lives

Blaise Pascal, a French Mathematician, Philosopher and Physicist (1623-1662) wrote:

We are never living, but hoping to live and [so] we are always preparing to be happy[..]

There is more to the Pascal quote - but it is that first part above that fits with my thoughts today - the reminder to myself to enjoy TODAY…NOW…the present moment(s). To be good and happy today (a September post) - I try to remember that always. I “preach” it also - whenever possible!!

Sunrise

It is easy to get caught up in “what ifs” and uncertainty. But we never, ever know what tomorrow may bring or in fact what the next hour, minute or second may bring. And all the seconds, minutes, hours, days - they add up to our years, decades -lives here on earth.

Whew - that’s all a bit serious for 7 a.m. in the morning…

On a lighter note and in the spirit of living my and our (Bill and my) days - what with me working a full time schedule from home and he being retired…and trying to work out how to enjoy this, still get my work done, chores done, together time - the eternal struggle of balance - I prepared the following to show Bill. My thought was that it is difficult for someone who has never been self-employed and particularly a “bill by the hour” scenario as I have, to really “get” the workable/billable hours thing. And it often seems like I should have more time for “fun”. Hence this schedule to illustrate:

Schedule

I patiently (REALLY!) explained that the schedule is not rigid - I adjust during the day as things happen, but the core work hours - they have to get done…mortgage, RV payment, groceries, RV trip expenses…. Bill sat and listened, asked a few questions then went off to his office/computer room…

In a short while, the following appeared in my email inbox:

Schedule

You can laugh, but it’s pretty darn accurate!

Bill

You would think I would have learned by now…that all efforts at anything remotely serious will be turned on me and used against me and OMG!!!- it is so much fun, though!!! And we laugh a lot. Unfortunately, one of the funniest things is that because of my schedule (see above), I am often kind of immersed in the business of work and so there is ample opportunity to get a zinger in while my head is still wrapped up in the “work” to which I react in some seriousness before realizing… you do see the problem, yes?

So…I’ll end this post with laughter, joy and gratitude that “The way we live our days, is the way we live our lives”
