Day 1 - Chipley to Robertsdale, AL
We have spent a fair amount of time in the bus – 3 or 4 day trips to Panama City for service and an overnight to friends in Georgia. But the overnight trip we were parked at their house … I made coffee but we had all meals with them. This trip was the first time I fixed meals in the bus - first park stop and hookup, walk Karl, spend the evening. It was a little disorienting! I’ve done all these things many times in my Winnebago but just me and pets and all of us creatures of habit and routine. And although I am familiar with where things are in the bus and most of the operational stuff and stowed the things I needed and wanted, it is that time of getting used to doing things just a bit differently.
I did manage to get us lunch and then dinner but I had a moment of panic when I realized that everything for dinner – and we brought plenty – was frozen solid… I had put all meat in the big freezer that Bill had installed in a basement compartment. Fortunately we had baked some lasagna and divied that up for lunches so we regrouped and had tuna fish sandwiches for lunch and lasagna for dinner -between what he had on board and what I had on board that moved to the bus, we have a lifetime supply of tuna fish – easy emergency food. No one starved, no one had a snit and being one who tries not to make the same mistake more than 3 or 4 times, I got some things out of the freezer for night 2…
Day 2 - Robertsdale to Livingston, LA
I worked a couple of hours in the early morning, walked Karl, made coffee before the Captain awoke…
Not too far down the road Bill asked if the map showed the next rest area - it was early for a lunch stop…his idea was that it was a good place for me to try driving for the first time. I did - the freeway stuff and where I was in the lane - not a problem. My fear and confidence breaker is the brakes. The engine brake - “jake brake” does not kick in immediately and I panicked just a wee bit and stomped on the air brake. Something to work on… Also my acceleration - in anticipation of possibly wanting to stop 40,000 plus pounds I resist flooring it… The good news is although Bill was a bit red in the face from exasperation, yelling direction, and ??? - no blood was lost or shed… I’m not sure I’ll be driving again soon, but at least I know I can move the monster down the road should I have to.
On to more learning from one’s mistakes…dinner day 2. I took 2 chickens and a loaf of gyros meat out of the freezer after Day 1’s dinner panic. So, “Rotisserie Chicken!” we thought. After we parked and unloaded the grill, I went to get the chickens from the frig. YIKES!!! - still hard as rocks. Had an extra drink and thawed some steaks. I have the chickens sitting OUT of the frig this morning…
