Indiana Jones…

October 11, 2007

So, do you remember the scene in the Indiana Jones movie where his father is dying and Indi must get the potion from deep in some cave-type place to save him.  He comes to what looks like an endlessly deep chasm - with no visible means to cross it.  His instructions are pretty clear, though, he is to step out in faith and cross the abyss.  In classic Indiana Jones fashion he does the “no way” look, turns around, thinks of his father, resigns himself and steps out.  Oh … there is a bridge, it was invisible as it blended perfectly with the background.  He is rewarded for his faith and willingness to risk all for his father.

I think of that scene often when I come to some place in my life where I have to decide.  The older and more life experience I have - whether it is intuition, the voice of God, common sense, unexplainable (to me) brain stuff or some combination of all of those, I usually feel like I have clear instruction when I’m “standing on the edge” of  “go or no go”.  Still, there is that “no way” moment and for a bit it seems like it would be so much easier and safer to just go back.  But the funny thing is, when I listen to the “voice” and step out over the abyss - there has always been ground beneath.  And even better - in that second I feel the move from simply existing to truly living.
